You Never Feel Far Away

When life became too heavy,

you were just a call away.

I never had to wonder;

you were already on your way.

Grandpa and granddaughter,

those memories still feel sweet.

Subway Italian sandwiches,

and bubble gum Jones soda as a special treat.

Ice cream trips and pocket candy,

little surprises you’d always bring.

If there was something that I wanted,

you’d somehow find that thing.

I spent my days at the junkyard,

did my homework by your side.

You gave me more than what I asked for; you gave your time with pride.

And every time you gave to me,

your happiness came through.

Like giving me the things I loved

was somehow joy for you.

Now I’m grown and you are gone,

but your memory still remains.

My children know all the stories,

and they still speak out your name.

So today we bought some lottery tickets,

and had chicken just for you.

The little things still bring you close,

like they always used to do.

Happy birthday, Grandpa.

We still celebrate your day.

You may not be here beside us,

but you never feel far away.
